Malaysia

Kuala Lumpur, Penang & East Malaysia

Ask most people what they know about Malaysia and you’ll get a shrug, or maybe a mention of Kuala Lumpur’s Petronas Towers or Merdeka 118 and then the conversation moves on to somewhere “more exciting.” I’ve lived that shrug my whole life, having been born and raised here, and I’ve come to think it’s a gift in disguise. Malaysia doesn’t get overrun, and what it keeps as a result is remarkable.

Take Sarawak’s Mulu rainforest in Malaysian Borneo, an ecosystem older than the Amazon, tucked away from almost every travel itinerary in Southeast Asia. Walk beneath its canopy and you’re moving through millions of years of undisturbed forest, home to some of the largest cave systems on the planet and wildlife found almost nowhere else.

And that’s just one corner. There are hill stations wrapped in mist, coral reefs still healthy enough to make divers weep, and cities where three or four cultures have shared the same streets for generations without losing their distinctiveness. Malaysia isn’t hiding, it’s just rarely asked to show itself. My personally crafted guides will help you ask the right questions.
